It is amazing just how much information is out there. Sometimes a little surfing is enough. Some restaurants even publish the recipes on their websites.

If you are a regular at a restaurant, try to find out information. Servers usually are well versed in the menu and how each dish is prepared. Usually they are privy to the secrets that the kitchen staff uses to get the flavor just right. In university, I worked as a server in a restaurant. It wasn't cheap food, but it wasn't a place you needed to dress up for. When a new item was introduced to the menu, the servers had to learn the ingredients, how things were cooked, basically the same information as the kitchen staff. That way, if a customer ever asked a question about it, we could answer. Sometimes just asking the server is enough. If you are a regular, and have been known to tip well, if there is something the server isn't sure of, you can bet they will go into the kitchen and try to find out the information you are looking for. In fact, some cooks and chefs are so flattered that you appreciate their good food, they will come out themselves and you can easily get pieces of information out of them.

If you are the quiet type, and asking these questions seems a little bit too difficult, you can still figure out a lot by looking at your dinner. Most menus will list ingredients, especially now with all the allergies people have. Write them down. Sneak out your cell phone when your dinner comes, and take a picture. Then, dissect your food. Sure it may take away some of the pleasure for that sitting, but you can look really find out a lot just by taking a deeper look at what is on your plate.

To get you started, here is the recipe for Claim Jumper Thai Cole Slaw!

Ingredients:
1/2 head Napa cabbage, thinly sliced
1/2 zucchini, julienned
2 jumbo carrots, julienned
2 green onions, sliced
1 tablespoon toasted sesame seeds
3 tablespoons shaved coconut
3 tablespoons roasted unsalted peanuts
2 tablespoons toasted almonds

Thai Slaw Dressing:
8 ounces Thai sweet chili sauce
8 ounces orange juice
1/2 ounce honey
1/2 teaspoon fresh ginger, chopped fine
1/2 teaspoon light brown sugar
1 teaspoon cilantro, chopped fine
1 tablespoon sesame oil

Instructions for salad: Combine the cabbage, zucchini, carrots, sesame seeds , onions, coconut, peanuts and the almonds in large mixing bowl. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

Instructions for Thai dressing: Place ingredients in a small mixing bowl and whisk them all together. Slowly add the sesame oil while you continue to whisk. Pour desired amount, about 1/4 cup, over chilled salad. Enjoy!

Argentinean cuisine is a melange of continental European (Spanish, Portuguese, German, Austrian and many others), native Indigenous, African and Asian. Some of the most favored foods are sausage, pasta and desserts which are also common to Europe and North America. Some of the local delicacies include empanadas (stuffed pastry), locro (mix of beans, meat, bacon, corn, gourd and onions), humitas and yerba mate (a tea which is considered Argentina's national drink). Spicy Spanish sausage (chorizo) and even a milk caramel jam called Duce de Leche.

Common foods

Some of the most common foods in the Argentine diet are their high protein meats such as beef, which is cooked on the barbecue (asado). Steak and ribs are both very popular as is spicy pork sausage, black pudding, cracklings and a special type of sweetbread called mollejas. In parts of the country, especially Patagonia, lamb and goat are the most common meat. Common snacks are breaded and fried meat which is most often eaten as a sandwich. Vegetables, salads made from mashed potatoes, as well as tomatoes, onions, lettuce, squashes and eggplant are very important in the Argentine diet.

International foods

Of course, for the tourist, a little taste of home is never far away in Argentina. Because of it's International cuisine, Argentina also offers a solution for those who miss something. Pizza, pasta, lasagna and ravioli are all available in many places. Hamburgers, hot dogs and pies are all over the place. As is German sausage, Jewish kosher, Arabic halal and Chinese, Vietnamese and Thai cuisine. There is even a Welsh community who are famous for their tea houses that serve scones, jam and cream.

Argentine drinks

Argentina's traditional drink is an infusion of herbs called yerba mate. This traditionally made drink is sweetened with sugar or flavored with orange peel and cinnamon to hide a bitter taste. Yerba mate is an important social ritual. Beer, wine and soda are all available of course. In Argenina, soda is actually wine mixed with carbonated water. The national beer is Quilmes and is from Buenos Aires.

Central region

Why to go to the Central region of Argentina is partly because of the cuisine. This area is around the capital Buenos Aires and is actually based a lot in traditional Italian meals. This area is also known for its cattle and thus beef is an important part of their diet. There is asado and dulce de leche, but also very popular is the milanesa, which is basically breaded meat. Roast beef, pizza are all typical to this area. Some pizza specialties include stuffed pizza, grilled pizza and mushroom pizza. Bread made from chickpea flour is also made as is all different types of pasta used in Italian style meals.

The provinces

The provinces of Argentina host a variety of very delicious and unique snacks and styles. Garden vegetables are all very important and one typical meal is the locro, which is a stew made from different types of corn grains. Maize cake, homemade liquors, distilled wine and many more are all part of the provincial cuisine.

A highlight for many people on a Thailand holiday is experiencing Thai food culture. Traditional rituals, great hospitality and fresh, vibrant flavours ensure Thailand is a food lover's delight, with exciting offerings on every corner- from busy street stalls to more luxurious restaurants.

Thailand is the world largest exporter of rice, and it is the staple part of a Thai diet. Rice is by no means just a food source in Thai culture, but is also associated to certain gods and traditions, differing in certain regions. It is unacceptable in Thailand to leave rice on your plate to be thrown away, as it is widely believed that it will anger the 'god of rice' a female deity who ensures that everyone will have enough food to survive upon.

Interest in Thai food culture has increased worldwide and is now a popular cuisine to eat in the Western world, with dishes such as Thai green curry and fried rice and noodles populating many menus. However, as many travellers to Thailand will be able to vouch for, the native Thai food will taste very different to recipes adapted for Western palates, where the presence of Chili is often pared down and restaurants often divide their menus into starters, mains and desserts, which is uncommon in Thailand.

Eating out in Thailand is often a social affair as dining alone is considered to be bad luck. Individuals will usually order one dish each and will share the meals between then group. It is considered a mark of respect and sophistication when an individual listens carefully to the orders of others around him and chooses a dish to complement his companion's choices. A typical Thai dining experience will include four different flavours all consumed together, salty, spicy, sweet and sour.

A common ritual in Thailand is to remove shoes before entering a restaurant or house, and to sit cross-legged on the floor to enjoy a meal. Dining tables are mostly used by the very wealthy and are even then close to the floor and usually made from teak.

Presentation is a key part of Thai food culture and chefs often strive to create delicate and intricate carvings from fruits and vegetables. Most people will have probably have seen examples of such creations such as flowers made from carrots, which have been submerged in ice water to retain their vibrant colour and strong texture.

Contrary to popular Western beliefs, most Thai's do not use chopsticks to eat (apart from noodles) but favour spoons and often only use forks to shovel food onto the spoon, rarely placing it into their mouth. Many Thai recipes are created using bite-sized portions of food so the need for knives is exempt.

Snacking is a cultural norm, with street stalls offering a variety of fares, from chicken and beef satay, to spring rolls, and sticky rice rolled into small balls.

Once a meal has been eaten, it is likely that the person deemed most wealthy or senior in the group will be expected to pay the bill. If a foreign person is dining with a group it is often considered to be them, so remember this if you are invited to a meal out whilst on your Thailand trip.

You can serve seafood starter recipes to impress your guests. Pan fried prawns or steamed mussels make brilliant starters and these are not too filling, so they are perfect before any main course. Seafood recipes are much easier than people tend to think.

Choose from mussels, crab, tuna, clams, prawns or anything else that takes your fancy. Fish and seafood goes perfectly before a meat, poultry or fish main course and your guests will love it.

Vol-au-vents are also quick and easy appetizers. You can buy readymade vol-au-vent cases and fill them with a creamy mushroom sauce or a minced beef and onion sauce or anything else you fancy. Vol-au-vents are perfect for autumn or winter starters because they are warming and delicious. These are also nice for buffets.

Whatever kind of dinner party you are arranging there are hundreds of easy starter recipes you can choose from. The best starters are those which are simple to make, although you can choose from classic starters or more exotic ones.
